The Concrete Jungle Where Dreams are Made Of (Kinda)

This week, we were tasked with making our own virtual world.

I’ve always loved exploring new cities, so I decided to build my own concrete jungle.

I followed a tutorial, which helped me get the general outline of how the city should be constructed. It also had some assets attached for me to make storefronts, apartments and other high rises.

Overall, it was tedious and time consuming, but pretty painless.

I did have a few problems with just the flow of Unity. I’m still pretty clunky moving around, and I find myself moving in all sorts of directions before getting where I need to go.

I also hate how Unity doesn’t snap things into place like many other softwares. I spent a ton of time just lining things up, rearranging them, and then finding I still didn’t quite get them flush.

I also got disoriented once I started building the subway underground. It made it much more difficult to navigate, and constructing things underneath there was tough.

My final problem: my assets kept getting deleted. I would put everything into Unity, and save it all to my computer…but after a few minutes I would come back to find things blank. It was incredibly frustrating, especially since I couldn’t remember which building textures went where.

But hey, at least we got through this week without any MAJOR technical difficulties, and I’m pretty happy with how it all turned out. Movin’ up.
